Outstanding Support By Arlington-Fairfax Elks Members for our Veterans/Military

Whenever a call is put out to our 2188 Lodge members for support for our Veterans and Military, our members immediately provide support above and beyond. This was truly the case in March when our Veterans Committee put out a call for cleaning supplies and snacks to support The Old Guard that guards the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The donations were so overwhelming in numbers that a large SUV with the seats down was needed to transport everything to the Tomb soldiers. Thank you to all who donated! You are amazing!! A special “thank you” also to our brother lodge in Woodbridge. They gave a large donation for the cause too. Elks Care Elks Share!

And as always, our lodge made our delivery of hearty, frozen food to the USO at Reagan National Airport and the Ft Myer USO (Joint Base Myer/Henderson Hall). This food delivery is made approximately every 3 weeks. This provides the Reagan Airport USO visitors food and snacks to help make their flight experience just a little better. At Ft Myer, the soldiers visiting the USO facility have a chance to get a frozen pizza or a breakfast sandwich, etc. that they can easily microwave for a hot snack/meal while visiting fellow soldiers, playing video games or just enjoying some quiet time.

Although each USO facility has a monthly budget, it is never sufficient to provide the extras for all their visitors. As a matter of fact, Ft Myer had over 73,000 visitor sign-ins last year. Wow! That’s why our Lodge’s support is essential. Thank you all again for helping to make that happen!

The cold, snowy weather from end of January into February meant delayed or cancelled flights at the airport. This means our lodge’s delivery of hearty, frozen food to the USO at Reagan National Airport and Ft Myer USO (Joint Base Myer/Henderson Hall) were very much appreciated. The Reagan Airport USO visitors had food and snacks to help make their flight experience just a little better. At Ft Myer, the soldiers visiting the USO facility had a chance to get a frozen pizza or a breakfast sandwich, etc. that they could easily microwave for a hot snack/meal while visiting fellow soldiers, playing video games or just enjoying some quiet time. And while making these food deliveries, our Elks volunteers enjoyed meeting another visitor to the Ft Myer USO - a golden doodle named Tilly. Tilly proved to be not only a beautiful, friendly dog but also a natural for pictures.

In February, our Lodge also provided support for a Veteran family - a single father with 4 daughters, who recently found housing with the help of the Dept of Veterans Affairs (VA). Then with funding from the Focus Grant and additional Grand Lodge funding, our Lodge provided furniture and household items to help furnish their new home. This program is a partnership between the VA and the Elks. The VA finds the homeless veteran housing and the local Elks Lodge provides the furnishings/household goods to truly make it a home.

As 2025 ended, our Lodge volunteers delivered 21 boxes of snack foods to the Ft Myer USO (Joint Base Myer/Henderson Hall). The delivery included such snacks as chips, beef sticks, protein bars, etc., which was funded by the Grand Lodge Freedom Grant. Volunteers also delivered 24 boxes of Girl Scout cookies (donated by Lisa/Michael Stevens) and 8 boxes of Lil Debbie’s Oatmeal Cookies (donated by Jerry Sall/Kathy Showker).

Then as the New Year began, our Lodge continued our support for our Veterans and Military with two frozen food deliveries in January 2026 to the USO centers at Reagan National Airport and Ft Myer. The hearty, frozen food provides easily microwaveable nourishment for the weary traveling visitors to USO Reagan and for the Honor Guard visitors to the Ft Myer USO.

Additionally, our Lodge volunteers delivered a Welcome Home Kit to a veteran who was moving into his new apartment. The Welcome Home Kit provides the necessities a home requires, such as bedding, sheets, kitchenware, pots & pans, toilet paper, etc. This program is a partnership between the Dept of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Elks. The VA finds the homeless veteran housing and the local Elks Lodge provides the furnishings, which is majorly funded through Grand Lodge Grants or other Grand Lodge funding.

On Monday, November 3rd, the Bedford-Lynchburg Elks Lodge No. 321 held a successful baby shower at the Bedford Pregnancy Center in Bedford, VA. The Bedford Pregnancy Center is a Christian-based nonprofit counseling center that provides support to mothers, expectant mothers, and their families.

Nine mothers attended the shower while we were present, with several more expected to arrive later. As part of the Spotlight Grant—focused on promoting literacy—we purchased $600 worth of children’s books. The remaining $1,400 was used to buy car seats, crib mattresses, and other essential items.

In addition to the grant funds, one member generously donated new clothing and knitted baby hats, and a non-member contributed handmade baby quilts. Everyone involved had a wonderful time supporting this worthy cause.

During the Ladies Breakfast, the ladies will be assembling "Handbags of Hope". This wonderful project was created by my Presidential Aide Gigi Jones several years ago. Thousands of these handbags have been distributed to ladies who have suffered mental as well as physical abuse, shelters, and hurricane survivors to name a few. Please review the list and bring some items along with a handbag or two. We will have some extra supplies to help fill these beautiful "Handbags of Hope".

Since we are in the hurricane season, these "Handbags of Hope" will go to an area if they suffer damages. If no damages, they will be delivered to a local "Shelter for Abuse" in the Virginia Beach area. Thank you so very much for participating in this very worthwhile project! July is a time to celebrate our nation and its diverse history. And what better time for our Lodge to honor and provide continued support for our military and veterans with our frozen food deliveries to the USOs at Reagan National Airport and Joint Base Myer/Henderson Hall (Ft Myer); and also with our Welcome Kit for newly-housed homeless veterans.

Our Lodge volunteers made 2 frozen food deliveries this month to the Reagan and Ft Myer USOs - one on July 8 and the other on July 28. This frozen food will provide a hearty sandwich/meal for the weary military/veteran travelers at the airport USO and also provide respite for the Honor Guard members at the Ft Myer USO, between the multiple funerals they perform at Arlington National Cemetery. Each delivery will serve about 190 for each facility.
Additionally, our Lodge volunteers delivered a Welcome Home Kit to a previously homeless veteran, who was moving into her new apartment. The Welcome Kit provides the necessities a home requires, such as bedding, sheets, towels, kitchenware, pots & pans, toilet paper, etc. This program is a partnership between the Dept of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Elks. The VA funds the homeless veteran housing and the local Elks Lodge provides the furnishings, which is majorly funded through Grand Lodge Grants or other Grand Lodge funding.

As Summer 2024 turns to Fall, Arlington-Fairfax Lodge 2188 support of the area USO facilities heats up and never falls short. Our Lodge volunteers delivered 10 boxes of hearty frozen food/sandwiches to both the USOs at Reagan National Airport and Joint Base Myer/Henderson Hall (Ft Myer) USO - filling their empty freezers. These food deliveries are made approximately every 3 weeks and are made possible by a Veterans Affairs Veterans Service (VAVS) grant from Grand Lodge and from the donations of our generous Lodge 2188 members.

Then, thanks to the Elks Grand Lodge Freedom Grant, we were also able to provide a very large delivery of essential snack foods to Ft Myer - 30 boxes. The snack foods include chips, protein bars, jerky, breakfast bars, apple sauce, etc. These snacks help power the Honor Guard members
