Hello Fellow Elks,
On June 5 2010 the Washington DC area is hosting the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. A few of us have formed a team to raise money and walk during this moving event.
Some of you may know that I participate on Team Robin every year in California in honor of my friend that passed a few years ago. Her first diagnosis was when she was just 26 years old. After her first battle she was thought to be in remission. Ten years later they found breast cancer tissue in her brain. Although she fought the battle hard, there was no cure.
Last year my first mammogram revealed tissue on both sides, I was lucky enough to have caught it one single stage prior to cancer. After my surgery I was fortunate to not require chemo or radiation, however I will have to monitor it for the rest of my life. I urge you all to make sure you get your mammogram soon and as needed on a schedule.
You do not have to have a family history to be affected, only a small percentage of women, and men, that are diagnosed have a family history of breast cancer. Please educate yourself on early detection and alternative therapy, but MOST of all, please donate to the research so desperately needed.
